Sightseeings, Ouzo Museums and Distilleries

Plomari is the capital of ouzo. At the area there are two ouzo museums. The first one is the Barbayannis Ouzo Museum near at Agios Isidoros area at the ouzo production facilities. Plomari Folk Art Μuseum The museum is located on the first floor of the building while on the ground floor there is a coffee shop. The museum is near the central square of Plomari next to one of the centenarian plane trees of the area.

  

Here are some remarkable exhibits: Local traditional costumes Domestic utensils and coins Historical documents like documents and books The Irini Nafpliotou’s personal library who was the first woman doctor.

 Cultural Centre- Soap Museum The restored I. Poulia’s Soap Factory, a building with a great architectural value nowadays works as a Cultural Centre of the township. It has a 250-seat capacity Salon Conference for cultural events, a foyer, guest rooms, a meeting chamber and a unique permanent exhibition about the ways of soap production and the Local History. Here you can also visit the exhibition for Commercial, Industrial and Naval Plomari at the beginning of the century.

 Churches and other sightseeings

 Church History Museum and St.Nickolas Metropolitan Church. The St. Nickolas Metropolitan Church is a three aisled basilica dedicated in memory of St. Nikolaos (1847). In the yard of the church in a separated building is located the Church History Museum of Plomari. In that museum you can get informed for St.Nickolas’s History and Life, the History of Plomari and the area around. Old Holy Images, Divine Liturgy Objects, Holy Grails, old Gospels, Benjamin of Lesvos’s codes, the Sultan’s edict that gave the permit for the construction of the church, old books etc. that decorate the museum. St. Paraskevi Church is located in the eastern entrance of the town. Its temple is made from white marble according to Byzantinologist Orlando’s plan.

Prophet Elijah/Elias Church is located at the highest pick of Plomari. St.Mary Magdalene Chapel is also wonderful. Its ceiling is inspired of the circular cruciform churches of Byzantium. Also worth seeing: the Highschool building of Plomari, Hatzidimitriou’s house, the old water fountains.

The Plane Tree

 

The impressive centenarian plane tree is said that is planted in 1813 at the old neighbourhood of the town with the mansions. There you can find traditional coffee houses and ouzo tavernas that offer tasty appetizers and food. In summer time live music nights that attract the interest of locals and foreigners are organized. The area has preserved the unspoiled architectural style.

Panagia krifti.

 

Panagia Krifti chapel is located in west side of Melinda that is 6 kms west of Plomari. The access to the chapel is by driving up a dirt track or by yacht. The scenery is unique the place is amazing. You can see steep rocks as hot waters streaming from their roots and they are reflected to the teal waters of the Aegean Sea. Holy Mary’s image is discreetly hidden there as it found a shelter in the notch of a big rock. This chapel is completely hidden in a spacious cave of a rock. According to traditions a lady finally saved her life as she was hidden there with her child because she was chased by some Turk soldiers on their horses. She was thankful to Holy Mary so she made a commitment to Her to build there a church. Every year in that place is organized a fair also where the residents of Palaiohori - the area that the chapel belongs to- get used to come on their horses as a revival of the Turk soldiers. In addition according to some testimonies many Greeks of the Asia Minor after the catastrophe came out with their boats in this area so it is believed that “Krifti” Holy Mary is their protector. Finally in the difficult years of the German Occupation of Greece many Greeks survived as they escaped to the Middle East with allied submarines that they unseen were approaching this inaccessible area.

Ambeliko Folk Art and Church History Museum

The Museum in the village Ambeliko consisted of folk and religious exhibits and an extra collection about the collection of resin from the pine trees. In summer time is organized the Resin Festival.

Festivals and Fairs

Ouzo Festival is of course the most important of the festivals that is organized in Plomari at the end of July. The distilleries of the area offer their product to the locals and the foreigners with traditional appetizers in combination with gastronomy lectures. The festival usually lasts for three days with dances and music from local traditional orchestras or bands and at last night the pick of the bunch comes from famous Greek artists that give concerts.

 

 

The Olive Harvest Festival- Glitomata At the beginning of June is organized this traditional festival for celebrating the olive harvest. Plomari is also famous for its quality olive oil that produces. The standardized olive oils “Irene” and “Aegean Gold” won many prizes in International and Panhellenic Competitions.

Festival of the Horse Here in Plomari there are some very active horse clubs that organize cultural activities. The Festival of Horse is organized in August and lasting three days. It is offered an exciting programme of competitions during the day and at night a folk revelry with live music, competitions of the most beautiful horse according its class and an award ceremony.

Navy Week The “Navy Week” as a traditional event is organized in July and is offered a varied programme of events and water activities like yacht and sailboat racing, swimming and fishing races, spearfishing. The week is completed with a Greek music night by drinking ouzo with traditional food and an award ceremony for the winners.

Easter in Plomari There are a lot of local traditions and events that organized in Holy Week of Easter every year in Plomari. On Good Friday the local parishes decorate their epitaphs and a peculiar tradition is exactly that: the procession of epitaphs at the central square. On Holy Saturday is celebrated Jesus Christ’s Resurrection and on Sunday (Easter) is organized the local tradition of second Resurrection in honour of the sailors.
